Is NMU Private Or Public?
The Nelson Mandela University (NMU), formally known as the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, is one of the public Universities in South Africa. Nelson Mandela University (NMU) officially came into being on 1 January 2005, following the merger of three institutions: PE Technikon, the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University.
Each of these institutions brought a unique legacy. PE Technikon traces its roots back to the PE Art School, established in 1882, the oldest art school in the country. UPE, South Africa’s first dual-medium residential university, was founded on 31 January 1964. Vista PE, the local campus of Vista University, played a vital role in opening access to higher education for previously disadvantaged communities.
This merger was part of a broader national effort to reshape higher education in South Africa, to create a more inclusive and effective system that could respond to the challenges of the country, the continent, and the world in the 21st century.
On 20 July 2017, the university was officially renamed Nelson Mandela University, the only institution of its kind in the world to bear the name of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. This change marked more than just a new name; it was an opportunity to reimagine the university’s identity, deepen its commitment to transformation, and strengthen its presence both in Africa and beyond.
